Broadcasting Commission
The Broadcasting Commission is the local electronic media watchdog body with the responsibility to ensure that appropriate standards are maintained. The Commission has the power to impose sanctions on media houses, which breach its regulations.
Creative Production and Training Centre
The Creative Production and Training Centre is a publicly controlled institution, which provides training in the creative arts, while renting its studios for the production of public and private sector television programmes.
Jamaica Information Service
The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) is the government’s chief information agency. The mandate of the agency is to disseminate information on government’s policies and programmes.
Television Jamaica (TVJ)
Television Jamaica (TVJ) is currently one of the country’s leading television stations. It was created following the privatisation of the state-owned Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), which was formed in 1962, as a public broadcasting service.
CVM TV
CVM Television is one of the major players in Jamaica’s competitive media landscape. It is a privately owned entity, which has carved out niche in the area of investigative reporting.
The RJR Communications Group
The RJR Communications Group, the country’s largest media and communications conglomerate, is the parent company of Radio Jamaica Limited (RJR), the country’s oldest radio station. It also owns Television Jamaica Limited (TVJ).
The Jamaica Gleaner Company
The Gleaner Company Limited, which was formed in 1834, is the oldest media house in Jamaica and perhaps in the English speaking Caribbean and Latin America.
The Jamaica Observer Limited
The Jamaica Observer, which is owned by the Gordon “Butch” Stewart, controlled Sandals Group, is the country’s only tabloid newspaper. The Observer like the Herald, has also carved out a niche in the area of investigative, business and financial reporting.
The Sunday Herald
The Sunday Herald is the only media house in Jamaica, which is completely owned by Journalists. The Herald is the country’s most fearless proponent of investigative and business/ financial journalism.
